Level 5 Diploma in Leadership - Children and Young People's Management Pathway

This Level 5 Diploma pathway is suitable for anyone working in a leadership position within children and young people's services.  It is likely that you will be the registered manager or be managing across a number of services and taking a strategic lead in both service delivery and development. You will be responsible for managing both the people who work in the service as well as the support services being delivered.  You will still be supported and supervised by someone more senior but this may be someone who doesn't work in the same location e.g. an owner; regional or group manager. Your job title will reflect the seniority of your management role.

58 of the 80 Credits required will be gained by completing the following 11 Mandatory Units:

  • Use and develop systems that promote communication (Unit 501)
  • Promote professional practice (Unit 502)
  • Champion equality, diversity and inclusion (Unit 503)
  • Develop health & safety and risk management policies, procedures & practices in health & social care or children & young people's settings (Unit 504)
  • Working in partnership in health and social care or children and young people's settings (Unit 505)
  • Understand child and young person's development (Unit 506)
  • Lead practice that supports positive outcomes for child and young person development (Unit 507)
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to support the safeguarding of children and young people (Unit 508)
  • Lead and manage a team within a health and social care or children and young people's setting (Unit 510)
  • Develop professional supervision practice in health and social care or children and young people's settings (Unit 511)
  • Lead practice in promoting the well-being and resilience of children and young people (Unit 512)

A minimum of 12 Credits must be gained by completing units from the following selection of Optional Units:

  • Develop procedures and practice to respond to complaints (Unit 519)
  • Recruitment and selection within health and social care or children and young people's settings (Unit 520)
  • Facilitate the development of effective group practice in health and social care or children and young people's settings (Unit 521)
  • Facilitate coaching and mentoring of practitioners in health and social care or children and young people's settings(Unit 522)
  • Manage induction in health and social care or children and young people's settings (Unit 523)
  • Facilitate change in health and social care or children and young people's setting (Unit 524)
  • Manage an inter-professional team in a health and social care or children and young people's setting (Unit 525)
  • Manage finance within own area of responsibility in health and social care or children and young people's setting (Unit 526)
  • Manage quality in health and social care or children and young people's setting (Unit 527)
  • Develop and evaluate operational plans for own area of responsibility (Unit 528)
  • Manage physical resources (Unit 529)

The remaining 10 Credits will be gained from a range of other Optional Units. These are likely to reflect specific job responsibilities or the type of specialist service you work in. Available Optional Units include:

  • Understanding professional supervision practice (Unit 532)
  • Understand physical disability (Unit 534)
  • Lead active support (Unit 544)
  • Promote good practice in the support for individuals with autistic spectrum conditions (Unit 547)
  • Support families who have a child with a disability (Unit 549)
  • Implement the Positive Behavioural Support model (Unit 554)
